WORLD MALARIA DAY 2022 REPORT: APHPN KADUNA STATE CHAPTER

The World Malaria Day is celebrated annually on the 25th of April, round the globe.  The theme for this year was Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives

The Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) Kaduna State Chapter marked the day with a series of activities and programmes held between 24th – 27th April, 2022. These activities and programmes included:

  1. Airing of radio jingles on the importance of environmental sanitation in malaria prevention, use LLINs and the importance malaria chemoprophylaxis in pregnant women attending antenatal clinics starting from 24th of April spanning throughout the week.
  2. A press briefing addressed by the Honourable Commissioner of Health Kaduna State Dr. Amina Mohammed-Baloni on the theme of this year’s World Malaria Day at 9 am at the Conference Hall, State Ministry of Health.
  3. A Malaria awareness road walk attended by the APHPN EXCO, Programme Manager State Malaria Elimination Programme (SMEP), the WHO, Society for Family Health, the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, and other partners and Civil Society Organisations. 
  4. A Community Outreach programme featuring Health Education and sensitization talks on malaria prevention and free Medical Outreach was conducted at Unguwar Rimi Ta Tsakiya, an urban slum on the 25th of April 2022. The activity took off by 10 am. The medical outreach was organised by the APHPN Kaduna State Chapter in collaboration with the State Malaria Elimination Programme (SMEP), and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria. During the outreach, 486 women and children under 5 years of age were tested for malaria using rapid diagnostic test and those found positive for malaria parasite were treated for malaria using artemisinin combination therapy (ACT). 
  5. A radio awareness programme on malaria prevention and control by the State APHPN Chairman Dr. M.A. Oyefabi was aired on the Supreme FM 96.1.
  6. A radio awareness programme in Pigdin on Supreme FM 96.1 on malaria prevention and the new malaria vaccine by the State APHPN Secretary, Dr. Sani Hammad on the 28th of April 2022. 

Our appreciation goes to the Honourable Commissioner for Health Kaduna State, the State Malaria Elimination Programme, the WHO, Society for Family Health, the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Unguwar Rimi Ta Tsakiya Community and all those who collaborated with us to make the commemoration of World Malaria Day 2022 a success.
