The International Day of Older Persons is a global observance designated by the United Nations to honour the role of older people in society. It aims to raise awareness about the opportunities and challenges of aging populations and advocates for policies that improve the well-being and inclusion of older individuals. October 1 of each year is designated for this purpose.
Plateau State government commemorated the National Day of Older Persons with the theme: “Celebrating the true value and significance of older persons and the integral role they play: recognising the friendly places and people that remove the barriers”. The organizing body was the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. Plateau Sate Branch of APHPN was invited to collaborate with the state. Activities included a fitness walk, and hangouts with the elderly in the 3 senatorial zones of the state that incorporated medical outreaches and a symposium.
The symposium was a grand event that held on the 5th of October, 2024. It also served as a “day out” with the elderly with music and dancing that was enjoyed by all. In attendance were the Deputy Governor of the State, Josephine Piyo, the Commission of Women Affairs, Caroline Panglang Dafur, and other dignitaries who delivered goodwill messages. Keynote address was delivered by Mrs. Abigail Samson Baguma, the Executive Director of Golden Sage Geriatric Foundation while two public lectures were delivered, one of which was delivered by APHPN’s very own Dr. Esther Ismaila.
