The APHPN Branch of Plateau State hosted a virtual CME in 2024. It was the second in the series of CMEs hosted by the current exco. The theme of the CME was “Food security in the current socio-economic dispensation of Nigeria”. It featured four well experienced speakers taking varied topics under the theme. The CME was attended by over sixty participants including the APHPH “golden” President, Prof, Alphonsus Isara and other APHPN elders, members and non-APHPN members. The following were the speakers for the event:
- Prof. Mathilda Banwat, a seasoned public health nutrition expert from the Department of Community Medicine, University of Jos/Jos University Teaching Hospital did justice to the topic “Food security in Nigeria; current realities”. The lecture was a precise analysis of the ongoing food security situation in Nigeria.
- Prof Steve Abah, a renowned environmental health specialist from the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State gave an in-depth view of the topic “The role of climate change in food security”. His lecture highlighted the link between climate change and food security.
- Prof. Grace Kia, a well-known veterinary doctor form the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, gave a very insightful lecture on “The vital role of public health physicians in safeguarding animal health and ensuring food security”. The lecture highlighted practical ways for collaboration between human and animal physicians.
- Dr. Musa Mahdi, the WHO State Coordinator, who was ably represented by Dr. Ibrahim Usman Muhammad (WHO HPV Consultant Plateau State), gave a practical lecture on “Global partnerships and collaborations to tackle food security”. He brought views on how we can leverage existing relationships to improve food security.
