Today the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) Rivers State Branch, ably led by *Dr Aloni Alali* in collaboration with the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) and the Rivers State Ministry of Health, successfully hosted a series of activities to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week.
This year’s theme focused on promoting and supporting breastfeeding, highlighting its numerous benefits for both infants and mothers.
The day began with a vibrant community sensitization initiative, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding.
Participants from various Organizations like the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, NAFDAC Rivers State Chapter, etc gathered for a Road Walk that led to the Rivers State Secretariat, demonstrating a collective commitment to promoting breastfeeding practices. The Vice Chairman of the Association *Dr Carol Joseph* who also is the Head of Nutrition Unit at the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, *Dr Onyinye Echedike-Elekwa*, the Treasurer, *Dr Siene Oluwatosin Orogun*, the Assistant Secretary/PRO were present with other members of APHPN Rivers.
The sensitization efforts included engaging discussions at local mosques and community centers on the significance of breastfeeding, addressing common misconceptions and emphasizing the nutritional and emotional benefits for both mothers, babies, families and Communities.
Following the sensitization activities, participants embarked on a spirited Road Walk. The walk, which featured banners and placards with slogans advocating for breastfeeding, was a powerful visual representation of community support. It attracted the attention of passersby, who were encouraged to join the conversation about breastfeeding and its importance.
The highlight of the day was the flag-off ceremony held at the Conference Room of the Rivers State Ministry of Health. The event was graced by key stakeholders, including health officials, community leaders, and representatives from various NGOs.
*Prof. Chituru Orluwene*, Senior Special Adviser on Health to the Sole Administrator of Rivers State *Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas( rtd*) , the Chief Host, welcomed attendees and emphasized the critical role that breastfeeding plays in ensuring the health and well-being of infants.
*Dr Vincent Nwachukwu*, the acting Permanent Secretary stressed that supporting breastfeeding is a collective responsibility that requires the involvement of all sectors of society.
*Prof. Alice Nte* delivered an insightful keynote address, outlining the global and local challenges surrounding breastfeeding practices. She highlighted the need for comprehensive support systems for breastfeeding mothers, including workplace accommodations, crèche in workplace, crèche in market places, family and community support groups. Prof. Nte also shared statistics demonstrating the positive impact of breastfeeding on child health outcomes, urging the audience to advocate for policies that promote breastfeeding-friendly environments.
The collaborative efforts of the APHPN Rivers, RSPHCMB, and the Rivers State Ministry of Health showcased a strong commitment to improving maternal and child health outcomes in the region.
